Quebec buying checklist

Used-car buying checklist in Quebec: what to verify before paying

Before paying for a used car, verify total budget, seller identity, road test, inspection, RDPRM, recalls, insurance, applicable taxes and the transfer process. The right vehicle is the one that clears those checks without a grey zone.

Use this checklist to slow the decision just enough to avoid a bad purchase. Run it before making a firm offer, then return to the quiz if your checks change the type of vehicle you should target.

Checklist verified August 16, 2026.

1. Frame the need and real budget

Before listings, define the vehicle's role: commute, family, region, work, charging, winter or towing. This choice affects format, tires, insurance and maintenance costs.

Also calculate the full budget: price, financing, insurance, registration, applicable QST, inspection, tires, initial maintenance and reserve. A tempting payment is not enough if predictable costs leave no margin.

2. Verify the seller and exact vehicle

Compare the seller name, registration certificate, VIN, mileage and available invoices. A clear listing does not replace verification of the specific vehicle.

Quebec's consumer-protection office separates private-seller purchases from dealer purchases. If the situation looks like a disguised commercial sale, be more cautious and verify the seller's status.

3. Inspect before the firm offer

Take a long enough road test and request an independent inspection before paying. The goal is not to find a perfect car, but to estimate repairs and catch problems that change the decision.

For a hybrid or electric vehicle, add energy-specific checks: battery condition, charging, cables, error messages and specialized maintenance history.

4. Check debts, taxes and documents

Search the RDPRM with the VIN before payment to reduce the risk of buying a vehicle tied to debt. Keep a copy of the result with your transaction documents.

The SAAQ notes that QST on a used vehicle is collected at registration in many transactions. Confirm the cost before finalizing your budget.

5. Finalize only when transfer is clear

The SAAQ allows certain transfers between individuals through SAAQclic, but criteria apply and some cases require another process. Confirm the procedure before handing over money.

Arrange insurance before taking possession, write down the price, deposit, mileage and vehicle condition, and do not let artificial urgency replace the checks.
