When to schedule the inspection
Inspect after checking vehicle identity, history and seller credibility, but before final payment. Put in writing that the offer is conditional on a satisfactory inspection.
Quebec's consumer-protection office notes that a mechanical inspection paid by the buyer can guide the decision and clarify the vehicle's condition.
What the mechanic should check
Request a road test and checks of brakes, suspension, tires, leaks, body, rust, warning lights, electrical systems and model-specific components.
For a hybrid or electric vehicle, add high-voltage battery condition, charging, heating and remaining warranties.
Cost, report and decision
CAA-Quebec currently publishes several inspection levels. On June 13, 2026, listed prices before tax range from $139.95 for certain member express inspections to $339.95 for a full road inspection of a four-wheel-drive vehicle for a non-member.
Use the report to reject the vehicle, negotiate with evidence or plan repairs. A seller refusing an inspection is enough reason to look for another vehicle.
Bring and request
- VIN, year, trim, mileage and available history.
- Seller's written permission for the inspection.
- Written report with urgent and future repairs.
- Estimate for major work.
- Decision before any non-refundable final payment.
